    Re: The KNBR thread

I think they could keep Rod Brooks but can Fitz, I don't hate Gary as much as the next, but i do believe it may be time to go to another non sports station or just do the tv gig. I've always kinda been on the fence about Krueger. He was always so negative, for the sake of being negative.

One thing i caught that was funny was they were having a conversation about drinking beer in the clubhouse during games and he was saying how you have people busting their ass on the field to win and these guys are in the clubhouse listening to their "walkmans" hahahaha i haven't heard that term in years.

    Re: The KNBR thread

On a related note, I wonder how much the state of the area's franchises impacts the programming (and host) decisions at a sports talk radio station.

Scenario 1: Most (a majority) of the area's teams are rebuilding or are just poorly run. No playoff hunts, no stars, limited success to report on.

Scenario 2: Many (perhaps most) of the area's teams are successful and well run. Constant playoff hunts, lots of stars, lots of success to report on.

The Bay Area has seen both of the above scenarios in the past decade. I wonder how much this impacts programming decisions.

Say, on the morning show, do you want to talk about 70s and 80s rock and growing up in the Bay Area during Scenario 1, but only on a limited basis during Scenario 2? Is Gary more relevant in 1 when "nobody cares", and less so in 2 when everyone cares? Is Damon Bruce dull in 1, yet exciting in 2? What about Larry Krueger?

Yes, I'm over-thinking it, but Xbay got me thinking with his above post on potential changes.

I don't think it has an impact overall. If the teams are sucking, people call in and bitch. If they are doing well, people call in to talk about the teams.

Fire them all and turn it into a country music station and just get it over with.

Or better yet, fire Radnich, Fitz and Brooks and most importantly stop being so f-ing greedy with running 42 minutes of commercials every 60 minutes. The station is impossible to listen to.

    Re: The KNBR thread

Yeah, it may be my own personal tastes that I'm thinking about. If the Warriors are horrible, I don't need to hear any more sports talk radio discussion on it after, say, November. If they're improving and fun to watch, I'll tune in all season long. However, if the host keeps his show interesting while the Warriors are horrible and doesn't continue beating a dead horse, I'll keep listening.

It may be that others like sports talk radio even more when the teams are down. People do love to bitch (myself included)!

    There is that.

Maybe I'll try listening to that new FM station on the way to work today.

I have tried a few times but not impressed so far. But really have not given it a ton of time.

True. But my commute, both ways, is about 25 minutes a day. How much is Sirius a month?

They have different packages but I think it is about $13/month.

95.7 the game is a great sports station. KNBR is a joke! the only guy's I liked were Tolbert and Damon Bruce. I will never listen to KNBR again unless they have a sporting event I like. I agree with Bada, they are the commercial leader. Give the game a try...they have really good programming. And the ads slamming the "leader" are hilarious.

    Re: The KNBR thread

KNBR and Ralph Barbieri have severed ties for what KNBR claimed as "management reasons." This is interesting and surprising and creates a ton of questions as to where Ralph goes (because tying "management reasons" and Barbieri together in the same sentence is like saying you're being dishonorably discharged after serving 25 respective years to the US military, so in other words, Ralph is NOT done with radio), what they do with Tolbert (who will be going solo until further notice), and what could potentially happen to someone like Damon Bruce or other hosts?

Should be an interesting few weeks for KNBR and Cumulus (who everyone is starting to hate even more by the minute).

    Listen to Tolbert here: http://www.knbr.com/Portals/3/0411tomsegment.mp3

    Wow.

Well... we'll see. I was like some of you in the past. I didn't really like the guy. But, in the years following my return to NorCal, I started enjoying listening to him with Tom. I may have disagreed with many of his points and opinions, but I found it to be good radio--far superior to any other show on KNBR.

    Re: The KNBR thread

I enjoyed Barbieri because he complimented Tolbert well. Great chemistry. But he did fall off and his ability to ask questions were poor.

There are reports that he constantly showed up late to work, often running 5-45 minutes late & this rubbed the folks at Cumulus the wrong way, especially with him taking frequent vacations during important ratings periods. But apparently, ratings increase when Tolbert is solo, rather than with Ralph.

This is essentially a statement made by Cumulus and that no host is truly safe. I expect to hear Radnich getting the axe any day now, despite receiving an extension (Barbieri received an extension last November and look at him now), as well as other hosts. Heck, Damon Bruce would LOVE to go back to 680 despite how KNBR's treated him over the last year.

It's going to be an interesting time at KNBR. Hopefully, they find an adequate host for the Sportsphone because Eric Byrnes blows.

    Re: The KNBR thread

Btw, Tim Kawakami posted Barbieri's statement about what transpired. I'd post it, but my laptop cannot access GSWRT, so I'm on doing this via my phone.

He basically said he was appalled at KNBR's decision to cut him just like that after 28 years of service. Said it only took them 7 minutes to erase 28 years. He was all, "Let's see. That's 4 years per minute." Definitely felt disrespected. I expect backlash within the coming weeks.

Oh, and I don't know if anyone listens to KGO, but expect axing over there soon, too.

    Re: The KNBR thread

Good by Ralph! I have hated him for about 20 years. The last several years Ralph did not even follow Bay area sports, let alone any national sports. He often would not know the answers to very basic questions about our Bay Area teams. He seemed to have interest in his job several years ago.

I read a comment from a listener that said "Ralph sounded like a troll sucking on helium"

KNBR is a dying station...listen to 95.7 the game.

    Re: The KNBR thread

I've tried 95.7... it's OK. I find some of the hosts/content obnoxious. I love hardcore sports content, and I think they do that better than KNBR, but I get real tired of hearing extended segments consisting of banter on host's various stupid nicknames.

    Re: The KNBR thread

The Rise Guys are okay, but I still prefer Murph and Mac. I ignore the Gary Radnich Show (with Larry Krueger) and Fitz and Brooks, but am all ears with The Damon Bruce Show and now the solo Mr. T. I occasionally listen to The Wheelhouse, but mainly from 10-12, so I don't listen to Radnich and then switch to Damon Bruce. The Drive is pretty average and Chris Townsend is meh.

I'm sure with Ralph gone, KNBR may start improving, but they'll need to cut ties with that tool Radnich and get Fitz and Brooks off the 12-3 spot on 680. What a waste of space Fitz and Brooks are. They're the lowest rated show, I believe, and I get nothing informal or entertaining from them.
