The Niners are definitely improving and probably in the best position to take the division for the last eight years. I can't wait for the season to start!

I'm sure I'm blinded by fandom, but the Niners are really looking like they'll have a breakout season. They are loaded with talent on both sides and it sounds like the players are buying what Sing is selling. I...CAN'T...WAIT...FOR...NINER...FOOTBALL!!!

Yup, it really boils down to just a few key questions:

    1. Can Alex Smith finally be a leader to be relied upon in key situations?
    2. With two rookies, will the offensive line be an instant upgrade, or will it take time for the new guys to acclimate themselves?
    3. Who will step up in the secondary?
    4. Will we finally have a legitimate return man?

I'm pretty optimistic on all fronts, because I feel the team has taken steps to ensure that they go well. Smith is finally entering a year as an unopposed starter with a returning OC; he won't have to prove himself in TC or spend time learning a new system. He has relationships with most of the offense's key players. Regarding the offensive line, the team hired Mike Solari, who is one of the best in the business. I read that Anthony Davis is already very close to signing a contract, which is great news. If the team can get Davis and Iupati signed ASAP, that gives them more time to earn starting roles and learn the offense.

In the secondary, Spencer and Clements are solid; Brown is a decent enough nickelback, and Goldson is looking great. I'm assuming Lewis will be the other starting S, and if so I hope he stays healthy. I also hope Mays and/or Reggie Smith step up and make cases for playing time this season, and that Goldson continues to improve. And as for a return man, we actually have three or four guys who are fighting for the role, all of whom would be massive upgrades from what we had last year. Between Kyle Williams, Ted Ginn, and Leroy Vann, we're bound to find at least one capable return specialist.

All in all there is a lot to be excited about for 49er fans this season.

The 49ers are favored to win the West. In fact, they have 1:1 odds to win the division; the only two teams in the entire league with better odds are the Saints and the Colts!

    edit: And the Ravens.

They really have to produce, and the rookies will be counted on a lot. But with some continuity on offense, they should be able to win some games that they wouldn't have previous years. They need to avoid the big game letdowns that seem to happen every year.

That's great! I like Singletary. Not completely 100% sold on him yet as a Head coach...
but I like him as a person, I like his intensity. He's what I like in a coach.
    (former player, hard work, discipline)
He's done very solid things towards bringing respect back to this organization.

Nice setup bada but I'm not buying. If the Niners don't win the division it's not all doom and gloom. It's too much hype for an organization with a premium history.

Division winners or no, the Niners are moving in the right direction and dismantling them would be a huge mistake. It will be time to stay the course and let Captain Sing lead us to safe harbor. ARRRRR <--- not sure how this became a sailing/pirate analogy?

I am serious Chum. In one of the worst divisions in football they have not won the division in FOREVER. Now this season you have the Cardinals lose a ton of players including their Pro Bowl QB, the Seahawks who have won 9 games combined in the last 2 years with a new coach, new offensive QB, all new position coaches and more roster turnover than any team in the league. And the Rams still blow.

Seriously, as a Niner fan your expectations have to be nothing less than a division champ. If they cant win it this year, when will they? when is a better chance than now?

Well, I think Arizona still has as good shot as anybody at winning that division. And Seattle is dangerous, although I think they're a step below both AZ and SF.

Too close to say there's a clear favorite.

I think they will win it. However, I don't think the division is completely weak. Arizona and Seattle both look strong enough to take the division in my mind despite, or in lue, of all the changes those two organizations have gone through.

If the Niners look better than they did last year but still fail to win the division I won't be calling for an overhaul. If they look worse than last season then I probably will. Simply as that for me.

That's fair Chum. I guess just if I were a Niner fan I would view this as the division is ours for the taking... opportunities in the NFL come and go quickly and they need to be siezed!

I definitely think the Niners have a great chance and they have to capitalize on the fact that Seattle and Arizona are dealing with some big losses/changes. But the 49ers are still quite a ways from being great; they have many questions still and even as optimistic as I am for them, I think they're far from a lock to with the division.

I think everything's on Leinart. If he's able to... well, be 3/4 of what Warner was (BIG if), the Cards will have a very good shot at winning the division. If not, it's the Niners to lose.
