Anybody watching this new HBO series? I am 3 episodes in and I am digging it.
Look one thread below... or maybe here:
Have you read the books, Bada?. Or is it your first contact is ASOIAF?
Hey TMC, maybe try and give meaningful titles to your posts and I would have seen it! LOL
No, I DO NOT read. In fact I don't know that I have ever read a novel in my life other than what was required of me in school and even then I would just skim through it. I really wish I could read a novel but it bores me terribly. I have tried reading at least 50 different novels... ones that people say "I swear this one will not bore you... just try it" and I cant get more than 100 pages into it. Even if I LOVE the story. I just don't have patience for it.
Anyway, to get back on subject, I have never heard of these novels or even knew this show was based on any novels.
But I am really liking the show so far. This genre has always appealed to me.
Are you watching it TMC? Sounds like we were really hyped on it so curious to get your thoughts
Hey, the title is fitting for those that know what it's about!!!
Ha!. Well, I won't even try, then... because ASOIAF is amazing, but also a heck of a ride, with the 5th book about to see the light (it's finished, will be published in July) and two more to finish the series, that, at his current pace, Martin will finish in... 15 years or so.
Seriously, it's a great read (if you ignore the continuous descriptions of food everywhere... those also get on my nerves), but some of those books go over 1,000 pages, and none of them are below 700. So... a handful, no matter how you look at it.
As I was saying, it's based on a series of novels called A Song of Ice And Fire (ASOIAF), that will, once it's finished, be made of 7 books. The show is going to follow one book per season, so season 1 is going to depict the events on the first book (A Game of Thrones) and has 10 episodes.
The show has already been renewed for a second season, that will be based on A Clash of Kings... and that's an even bigger book. Martin is saying 12-13 episodes to cover everything.
Hopefully they'll have more seasons, because A Storm of Swords, the third volume, is even better...
I must admit the genre is not among my favorites, but probably because, usually, it's poorly done (I'm talking about books, movies... whatever), in a... let's say, "teenage" style. ASOIAF is exactly the opposite. It's the same genre, but written from an adult point of view, and it shows on the characters, in their motivations, in their behavior... it makes it realistic. It makes it believable. And it makes a GREAT show.
Yeah, I'm following it. And I'm fully satisfied with the show. It has met everything I expected so far.
It hasn't added anything new, tho, because it follows the story perfectly (not surprising, because GRR Martin is closely involved with the show), so I haven't been surprised by anything that happened (you, on the other side... just wait. The best part about not reading the books is that... nothing will spoil the shock fun for you ). Apparently, they've made some minor changes to the story, tho, but I haven't seen any yet.
In any case, the show is nearly perfect. So far, it's the show of the year, and it will be very difficult to beat.
If anything, I'd change a couple of performers (for some reason, I don't like the guy they picked for Jon Snow, for example), but other than that... it's absolutely amazing.
What do you think about it, bro?. As I told you, the best is yet to come... but what are your first thoughts on the show, Bada?
Good stuff TMC.
Like I said... I am totally digging it. Without having any knowledge that this was a previously created story, I am enjoying it without any knowledge or preconceived notions.
I think the acting and writing is fantastic... I am pretty glued to my TV. Man, the way the first episode ended with
the boy falling to his apparent death
took my breath away. Same thing with episode two with
the killing of Lady and the boys eyes opening
... for a few moments you cant even speak. Sign of good writing and being fully invested in the story.
But man, after 3 episodes, I want to kill all those Lannisters!!! God damn I hate them... well with the exception of Tyrion who is played beautifully by Peter Dinklage... digging that character so far but can't quite figure him out yet. I want to rip the face off of the Queen's son... that little prince dude bugs the CRAP out of me.
I admit to being a bit confused on some of the plot but despite a complex plot with many story lines and characters, I have been able to follow it pretty well.
I have another one on my DVR ready to be watched!
You're gonna love it!!!
Seriously, you're catching up pretty well... I know there are some aspects of the plot that seem... a bit out of place, but everything gets explained later. Well, most of it, anyways, because two books are still unwritten...
But, in any case, you're just startint an amazing (albeit long) trip, mate!
As for characters... I think you're grasping them pretty well. Particularly Tyrion because... well, that's his game.
Friendly advice here: when Martin writes, he means bussiness... try no to get too attached to any character
And don't worry, there's nothing random. That's why it took him 5 years to write A Dance With Dragons
Really interested to keep reading what you think of it. I really wish I hadn't read the books before... well, not really, but the amazement of not knowing what's going to happen is somewhat lost to me.
Enjoy the 4th episode, bro!
will do bro. I will try and post my thoughts on each episode after I watch it.
very excited about this series!!!
As you should!
We're already halfway through the first season (well, or will be after next sunday's episode)... and you've seen nothing yet...
What is the background on this show? what's it all about? never heard of the show or books
I dont have any of the background on the novels but here is a pretty good trailer of the first several episodes.
And almost free of spoilers... unless you get into each book link. You've been warned, tho...
Come on, Rob!!!. Give it a chance!!!. It'll become your new Dexter!!!
Looks pretty sweet, and i need a new "Dexter" since i'm waiting for the next season as well as the next season of Breaking Bad
Bada!!!. Have you seen the latest episode?
If you haven't... get ready, because, after a long intro so you get to know the backstory and the characters, this is were the good stuff starts!!!
No, not yet. I just watched episode 4. Glad to hear they start covering the back story. I am starting to get REALLY confused as in Eps 4 they make references to a lot of things in the past... obviously their is a quite a history between the Lannisters and the Starks.
And I am COMPLETELY confused about the Ser Jorah Mormont character and with the Targaryan's.
However I LOVED the line that Daenyrs says to her brother after he smacked her:
"The next time you raise a hand to me will be the last time you have hands"
Yeah, it's really complex, and some issues still haven't been solved in the books, just hints (remember there are three left to be published, and two of them to be written, in fact...) so don't expecto to see them all solved in the series.
But you'll get the hang of it. After this 5th episode, you should have a pretty clear picture of the main sides... and now the game begins!!!
As for Mormont... he just happened to be there... his past is more related to the Starks than the Targs.
He's more of a tool than anything... but to whom, I won't say.
Only two episodes to end the first season!!!
How you doing, Bada?. Have you been able to keep up with the show?
I think I am one behind... or actually if there was one last night, then I am two behind. I LOVE the show... I admit to being completely confused however. There obviously is so much history and so many connections between families and then with the Targs but I can't piece it all together yet. But I am totally into it... just a bit behind in my TV watching.
Ok, then... let me confirm that you're TWO behind. And the best two, I might add... The story is all set, as the first 6 episodes are all setting, an attemp to get you into the characters and the story itself... but it really doesn't start until episode seven. Episode 8 is where you realize what kind of amazing trip are you taking...
Get ready, bro!!!
And don't forget to post after you watch it. I'd really like to read what you think of the next episode.
PS: Really, it's a blessing for those of you that haven't read the books... it has no cliffhangers for me, and it's detracting a bit from the experience.
Oh, and there some deviations from the books... although minor ones. We'll leave those for another post, tho...
OK, I watched episode 7. Getting VERY heated.
I have so many questions but I don't know what should be answered or I should just keep watching... I will let you make the call since you know the story
So are Cersei and Jaime REALLY brother and sister? I thought it was somehow a secret that they were not really related but it seems as if they are... disgusting!
What the fuck is the deal with Petyr... can't figure that guy out. My assumption is the woman he is referring to is Ned Stark's wife when he says he "is saving himself for someone" Shifty motherfucker
I honestly don't understand the whole Jon Snow stuff... what is the purpose of that one dude being so mean to him? If he is the best fighter, why are they fucking with him by making him a steward? Is it simply because he is a "bastard" or does this guy have something against the Starks?
One thing I HAVE learned is DON'T FUCK WITH Khal Drogo!
And the BIGGEST question I have is why the fuck do all these people think they have the right to the throne? WHO THE FUCK is the rightful heir? Why would the Targs have any right to the throne of the 7 kingdoms? So damn confused!!!
I'll try to answer as many as I can without spoiling anything, bro...
Yes, absolutely. That much is undisputed, as revolting as it is...
Eh... yes and no. Give him time to grow. Cat is the woman of his dreams, true... but he's not stupid. If he can't have her... well... things will happen, and he'll be in the middle of it.
Again, I won't answer this one directly. In the third book you learn a lot of why Snow is treated like that and what's going to happen with him... let's call it destiny.
Can be a bit confusing at this point, tho... but there's a reason for everything.
Actually, Daenerys would have been the rightful heir (well, Viserys was, but he died a few episodes ago) but the mad king was a Targaryen and the whole realm united against him. Robert Baratheon was named king, married Cersei because he needed the Lannister's money and suuport and now... well, you see what happens when you don't have a clear heir... or the one you have is tainted.
And you haven't met Stannis yet... or the Prince of Dorne (the south of the realm... shouldn't appear til the second book, and become a power player later)
It's the GAME of Thrones, baby!!!!
btw, just read that season 1 doesn't end with the end of the first book... and that first book keeps the story moving in season 2 (and considering it's a slow-paced show and that we only have a couple of episodes left of season 1... there was no other way).
On one side, it's great, because if they make the whole Song of Ice and Fire, we're gonna have like 15 seasons or so, as the first book ain't even the biggest one... Just wondering if ratings will stay high, because it carries a pretty high budget (around $60 million per season) and HBO won't invest on the show if people start to leave it.
But hey, so far, so good!!!
